I very much appreciate the opportunity to review the recently published book entitled Operative Atlas of Endoluminal Aneurysm Surgery edited by Yusuf, Marin, Ivancev, and Hopkinson. The book is extremely well organized, effectively written, and very useful to the surgeon or radiologist who desires the details of endoluminal aneurysmal surgery. The text is precise and accompanied by immensely practical radiographs, photographs, tables, and instructive drawings.

The first section clearly outlines the preoperative assessment of patients with aneurysmal lesions from the etiological and diagnostic standpoints. Spiral computed tomographic angiography, aortography, and magnetic resonance angiography are described in detail, and outstanding examples are included. Accompanying artwork and informative discussions round out a very instructive clinical section.

The second section of the book is devoted to the approach used by Dr. James May of Sydney. Dr. May was among the first to embrace the endoluminal approach to aortic aneurysm repair. His group uses the Baxter endovascular graft system. The text details an excellent description of how to use the graft, with suitably incorporated photographs and artwork, and a discussion of practical pertinence.

The third section focuses on bifurcated repair for infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysms. A number of systems available worldwide are discussed, including the Vanguard system, the Zenith EndoStent system, the AneuRx device, the Ancure system by EVT/Guidant, and the Talent stent-graft system. Each device is described in a separate chapter, and explanations of the deployment of these devices are presented with sufficient detail to be clinically useful. Additional factors covered include possible pitfalls, clinical pearls, results, and complications.

The fourth section incorporates a discussion of aortoiliofemoral repair of abdominal aortic aneurysms using the balloon-expandable Parodi/Palmaz system. This is followed by a discussion of the Chuter-Gianturco device, and comments on the Malmö-Nottingham system. As in previous sections of the book, an excellent analysis is accompanied by appropriate aortograms, photographs, artwork, and tables. The explanation is clear and concise, yet detailed. Each chapter contains sufficient information for troubleshooting each of the systems. Once again, results and complications in a clinical setting are described.

The final section of the book is devoted to endovascular repair of thoracic aneurysms, as practiced by the leading experts in this particular segment of the aorta, under the direction of Dr. Michael Dake at Stanford. Their work with the Gianturco stent-Dacron endoprosthesis is discussed thoroughly with clinical relevance, and their results are described along with potential problems. Since very little information is available in the literature, assessment of the results is devoted to the experience at Stanford, which is represented in the tables.

The book is an up-to-date account of virtually every endovascular device available for the treatment of aortic aneurysm pathology. It is excellently written, illustrated, and edited. The well-organized outline makes it easy to read and a valuable reference for anyone approaching the endovascular treatment of aneurysmal disease at resident to physician level, whether cardiologist, radiologist, or surgeon. I would recommend this book to complement any specialist’s reference collection concerning the field of endovascular surgery.
