This is a comprehensive book that assembles a good deal of knowledge on cardiac assist devices for the neonate, infant, and child. Written by an international group of authors with hands-on experience, and edited by Dr. Brian Duncan, this book presents a fresh approach to mechanical support in this group, which represents the most critically ill subset of patients.

The book starts with an overview of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), probably the most important means of support in pediatric patients. Realizing this importance, the topic is well covered, explaining technical aspects, circuit setup, indications, contraindica-tions, weaning, and current results. The use of ECMO for cardiac support in children with noncardiac disease is also described, including its use for perioperative support in pediatric lung transplantation patients. There is a dedicated chapter on intensive care management of cardiac patients on ECMO and another on rapid deployment ECMO. This book also looks at the use of the centrifugal pump as a ventricular assist device (VAD) in pediatric cardiac surgery; intraaortic balloon pumping in children; and mechanical circulatory support in myocarditis, cardiomyopathy, and cardiac transplantation. Other chapters discuss the use of the HeartMate left VAD, the Medos VAD, and the Berlin Heart in children, as well as future developments in the field. Nursing aspects of circulatory support are not ignored and are nicely discussed.

Overall, the book provides an excellent reference for practical aspects and current knowledge related to circulatory support in children. It transforms the available worldwide experience into a well written text that is easy to read and follow, with adequate supporting graphs and figures. It is highly recommended for surgeons, cardio-logists, intensivists, perfusionists, and nurses working in this field.
