A Look into the Region
A traditional Batak House, Lake Toba, in Sumatra, Indonesia adorns the cover of this issue. Toba, the largest volcanic lake in the world, is 100km long and 30km wide and situated in the center of the lake is Samosir Island, home of the indigenous Batak people. Their traditional houses are shaped like Starships for the Batak believe that after death they will be transported to the Celebes Star formation in the heavens from where they came. The old religions of the Batak were based on animism which involved the acknowledgment of many Gods, great emphasis placed on the power of the mind, and a strong fear of ghosts, demons and even ancestors. The Batak are renowned for their musical talent, skillful dancing and beautiful art and crafts including wood carvings.
