A LOOK INTO THE REGION
An aerial view of the Tsing Ma Bridge in Hong Kong adorns the cover of this issue of the journal. This new landmark structure connects downtown Hong Kong to the new international airport at Chek Lap Kok sited in the northern coast of Lautau Island. It is the world longest span suspension bridge carrying both road and railway traffic by providing a six-lane roadway and two rail tunnels slung beneath. The total length of cable wire used was said to be enough to stretch four times round the world. The construction commenced in May 1992 and completed in May 1997. Previously aircrafts arriving Hong Kong had to land at the Kai Tak Airport sited in urban Kowloon. Often air passengers were given the experience of seeing the aircraft skimming over rooftops just before landing.
